Thank You Sustaining Members

We finished the Rotary Year on June 30, 2010 with $8,969 in Foundation giving. This included $4,969 from our membership and the Club’s matching $4,000. Sadly, this fell just short of our $9,000 goal. Had I had my spreadsheet updated just a few days earlier, I would have donated another $31!

Happily, our giving also included four club members reaching their Paul Harris Fellow +1 benchmark of $2,000 in total Rotary Foundation contributions:
Doug Berman
Chris Izzo
Steve Jamison
Elizabeth Wolf.

Look for the presentation ceremony for these three gentlemen in the very near future.
I received my award from past President Lydell Nunn at our last meeting of the 2009-2010 Rotary year, and would like to take this opportunity to repeat and reinforce the short message I left you with at that time.

Our benchmark giving levels are:

A Sustaining Member is one who contributes $100 to the Foundation in a given year. The goal set forth by Rotary International through their Every Rotarian, Every Year initiative, is that each member, worldwide, be a sustaining member every year. York-East had 38 Sustaining Members in 2009-10 – somewhat less than 50%.

If you make the Sustaining Member contribution every year, in ten years you will reach a cumulative contribution of $1,000, making you a Paul Harris Fellow, at which time you are recognized with a Paul Harris pin and a certificate. Because we have a tradition of matching funds from the club, the path to becoming a Paul Harris Fellow can be shortened to five years. Our club has 50 current members who have received the Paul Harris Fellow recognition, with 23 of those fifty having +1 (additional $1,000) or more, all the way up to +6.

Ten years of contributing at the Paul Harris Fellow level will give you the honor of being a Major Donor, with your $10,000 cumulative contribution. And of course, there is a special lapel pin for the Major Donor level of giving.

If you decide to make the Rotary Foundation the charity of your choice, a commitment of $1,000 per year with goal of becoming a Major Donor will gain you entrance to the Paul Harris Society. And, yes, there would be a pin for that, too.

At whatever level you gift during your lifetime, the Foundation also looks to build its endowment through posthumous giving. You may become a Benefactor my making the Foundation’s Permanent Fund a $1,000 beneficiary in your estate plans. Couple or individuals who have made commitments of $10,000 or more in their estate plans, such as in a will, living trust or through life insurance, can become Bequest Society members.

I would be happy to discuss giving levels with any club member at any time.

The Rotary Foundation goals for 2010-2011, under the leadership of our new Rotary Foundation Chair, George Dvoryak, are:

1. $9,000 Total Giving to the Foundation
2. Increase the number of Sustaining Members by 10%
3. Develop a Rotary Foundation Committee
4. Within the committee, develop an “expert” in the transition the Foundation is making in its grant structure

If you are interested in helping on the Foundation committee, please let me, President Jim Walters, or Foundation Chair George Dvoryak know of your interest.
