Polio Facts & Figures from RI
Rotary, with the help of friends like the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization is just a tiny bit short of eliminating polio from the entire world. As long as there is even ONE new case, children throughout the world are at risk. Rotary has been working with its world partners for 20 years on this mammoth project, and we’re VERY close to being successful. Look below at the figures:
Area number of cases in 2010:
Afghanistan 10
India 21 (down from 67 in ’09)
Nigeria 3 (down from 312 in ’09)
Pakistan 24
Non-endemic countries 291
Total 349
BUT, there has been a new outbreak just this year in Tajikistan. 239 new cases!! This outbreak originated in Uttar Pradesh, India. RI has provided $500,000 in emergency grants to UNICEF and WHO to STOP this new outbreak. As long as there is even ONE new case of polio, ALL of the children in the world are at risk.
How can YOU make a difference?
The easiest way is by giving money to Polio Plus. $60 provides 100 doses of polio vaccine. $100 buys 200 posters promoting immunization. $250 provides 500 aprons to identify health workers, volunteers, and immunizers. $1,000 will make 700 vaccine carriers possible.
So far Rotarians have raised $133 million toward the Gates
Foundation challenge of $200 million in matching money. We’re well on our way, but we still have a way to go. ROTARY IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE – WORLDWIDE!
I’ve sent my contribution, how about you?
